RB Reachbay Atelier

Home  /  The Atelier

An interior atelier that quietly thinks like an architect.

Reachbay was founded in 2011 above a quiet kopitiam in Damansara Heights by a former contracts architect and an interior designer who had grown tired of glossy mood boards that never met a building site. Fourteen years later, the recipe is unchanged: do the architecture work, then dress it with care.

Our way of working

Composition is patient. Hurry it and you pay twice.

We accept a deliberately small number of new commissions each year — usually between fourteen and eighteen — so that the same two designers can stay with a project from the first studio coffee to the day the keys are handed over. That continuity is the difference between a house that feels designed and a house that feels assembled.

Every brief begins with a written record of how you live, not how the property listing imagines you live. Where the morning sun lands. Whether the children eat at the island or the dining table. Whether you cook with the windows open or the air conditioner on. We draw to that, not to a magazine.

The principles we draft to

Six tenets we hold above the rest

01 · Composition

Architecture before decoration

The cornice does not save the floor plan. We resolve the bones of a space — proportion, daylight, circulation — before we choose a single finish.

02 · Material

Honest materials, slowly chosen

Travertine, white oak, lime plaster, brushed brass: materials that earn a patina rather than fight it. We avoid finishes that look tired after two years.

03 · Site

Same designer, sketch to handover

You will not be handed off to a junior after the contract is signed. The hand that draws the plan is the hand that signs off the joinery.

04 · Cost

Specifications priced line by line

Three tendered vendors per package. No hidden mark-ups on the trades. You see what the supplier sees, and our fee sits transparently on top.

05 · Time

A Friday log, every week

Photographs, the week’s decisions, the next week’s decisions — in your inbox by 5pm Friday. No need to chase, no need to wonder.

06 · Aftercare

Eighteen months, not eighteen weeks

The first monsoon will find every joint that was hurried. We come back, we fix what moved, we close the file properly.

The people in the room

A studio of nine, on purpose

We have kept the studio deliberately small. A senior pair leads every commission, supported by two project leads, a draftsperson, a tender coordinator and an interiors stylist. Anyone you meet on day one will still be there at handover.

Co-founder

Adrian Choo

A contracts architect by training, a quiet diplomat by temperament. Reads tender documents the way other people read novels.

Co-founder

Liyana Mokhtar

Studied interiors in Glasgow, came home to Bukit Damansara. The studio’s instinct for materials and the keeper of its colour archive.

Project lead

Hafiz Suhaimi

Eleven years on Malaysian construction sites. The reason the trades arrive on time and the Friday log lands at five.

Coffee at the atelier?

The studio sits above Plaza Damansara. There is parking, there is good coffee, and there are always samples to handle.
